What is the Cobra for Flute?

Probably the only Cobra you ever heard of is the snake, right? So why would a poisonous snake help you play your flute!

Of course this type of Cobra is not a snake, it's an accessory for the flute that's just called a Cobra. Its name comes from the fact that it is a ring with a head that stands up in a similar fashion to that dangerous snake. But this Cobra, a flute support, is not dangerous at all. It is indeed an accessory for the flute, a ring that is worn on the left index finger and which holds the flute securely while all your fingers (and thumbs) are free to play the different notes. So the Cobra for flute is a very good thing!

How does the Cobra Flute Support Ring Work?

Have you wondered how to keep your flute stable when playing? You want to just focus on playing beautiful music but you also have to make sure the flute is at the correct angle to play the right notes. Don't you find that you have to hold at least one finger and/or thumb at a strange angle, painful sometimes, to keep the flute from slipping? Well, you're not the only one with this problem! Even professional flute players have to use their fingers and thumbs, which would be better used playing the notes, to keep the flute stable. That's why the flute support was invented!

The Cobra ring is worn on the left index finger with its "head" sticking out so that the flute rests securely on it. This provides a much more stable support for the flute than just the finger joint. Also, the Cobra continues to hold the flute even if the finger and thumb are moving on and off the keys. This takes a bit of adjustment, but the Cobra is designed so that the angle of the head can be changed to suit the player.

The Cobra ring comes in three sizes, and the metal is also flexible enough to allow some adjustment so that the ring fits your finger perfectly - not too tight to be uncomfortable but tight enough not to slip. The Cobra comes in 2 different styles - the original basic style with a single ring and the newer style with a double ring  and extended, jointed "tail" for greater support and stability. There are three sizes of Cobra rings - small, medium and large - so you can pick the one that will fit your finger best. On top of the metal is rubber coating, so there is no danger of the Cobra damaging your valuable flute.

The Cobra now comes in several colors too, although the "heads" and "tails" of the Cobra are always black. In addition to the standard black colored ring you can get silver or gold colored rings - better match for your flute! And for those who want something more distinctive there's a whole bunch of new colored rings - pink, blue, purple, green, and more.

Since the Cobra is worn on your finger it does not need to be attached to the flute itself. This is great because it doesn't affect the tone when playing, nor is it likely to scratch or otherwise damage the flute. And of course it doesn't get in the way when it's time to clean your flute.

Are there any problems with the Cobra? Well, the main thing is that it takes a little time to become accustomed to using it. At first it feels a little strange, even uncomfortable. But that's kind of like when you wear a ring or a watch. When you first put it on you notice it all the time. Then, after a while, you feel strange when you're not wearing it.

Also, adjusting the angle of the head is very important. If you don't adjust the head you may find that the flute isn't very stable. But once you've got the idea of how the flute balances on the Cobra's head and how to hold your finger correctly to support it, it's all good.
